As they loaded their sparse belongings into Liam’s newly purchased old truck, Ashlyn could see he was on edge. Liam had been up before dawn, going through their supplies. He didn’t want to make many stops. Only those out of necessity. Their drive would take seven hours. Their destination was a northern Colorado town called Fort Collins.

He’d been cleaning his weapons and checking the amount of ammunition they had on hand. It was as if they were going to see not a long-lost relative but the head of a terrorist organization, and Liam’s preparations pushed Ashlyn’s mind into a state of hypervigilance.

She was used to that space as a nurse, watching for any sign in her patient that they were slipping from this dimension into the next, but she rarely had the accompanying anxiety paired with it.

This is what Liam must feel all the time. That no place, no situation, no person can be fully trusted, no matter the history you have with them. Lord, please grant us safety on this journey. Keep Liam’s mind here in the present with me and help me better understand the trauma that he is going through.

Liam settled in the driver’s seat and gave her a weary smile. “We can make it a few hours before we need to stop and get gas. It will probably be better if we get out of Jackson as fast as we can.”

He’d woken her up an hour before daybreak and now the sun was just peeking over the horizon—like how Emory loved it when Ashlyn played the game with her. As they got ready, he’d given her a lesson on how to reload the weapons they were carrying. In case something happened, he wanted her to be able to help him...or herself if he couldn’t anymore. The thought distressed Ashlyn, but in nursing, the worst-case scenario was always prepped for. She couldn’t be upset with Liam for having the same mindset. Ashlyn rested her head against the window, and it wasn’t long before the hum of the wheels against the blacktop lulled her back to sleep.

She didn’t know how much time had passed when she felt Liam grip her thigh. “Trouble.”

Ashlyn sat straight up and rubbed her eyes. Liam motioned to the rearview mirror, and she turned in her seat to see the black SUV narrowing the distance between them.

“He caught sight of us a few klicks back at the intersection of this road and an old county road—spun around and followed.” Liam reached down and eased his six-shot revolver from his ankle and handed it to her. “The way they’re coming up on our tail, they don’t have good intentions in mind.” He turned briefly and slid open the window at the rear of the truck. “You need to slow them down.”

“Liam, I’ve never shot a gun before in my life.”

“You have. Once. You were a pretty good shot.”

“That was a fluke. No amount of skill involved.”

“Ashlyn, this will not end well if we don’t get on the offensive.
